The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that every valid vote will count in the 2027 general elections, reaffirming the Commission's commitment to conducting credible, transparent, and peaceful polls.
Prof. Amupitan gave the assurance on Friday during a courtesy visit to former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), at his residence in Minna, Niger State.
The INEC Chairman was accompanied by a high-level delegation that included National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors, and his technical aides.
Speaking during the visit, Amupitan described General Abdulsalami Abubakar as "the father of democracy in Nigeria," praising his leadership in overseeing the country's transition from military rule to civilian democracy in 1999.
He noted that the electoral body views the former Head of State not only as a respected statesman but also as a dependable supporter of INEC's efforts to strengthen Nigeria's democratic process.
Amupitan also commended Abubakar's leadership of the National Peace Committee, describing its Peace Accord initiative as a significant force in promoting peaceful elections and responsible political conduct.
According to him, the initiative has continued to provide political parties and candidates with a platform to publicly commit to non-violence before elections, helping to protect the integrity of the electoral process and uphold the will of the Nigerian people.
The INEC Chairman reiterated that the Commission remains focused on delivering free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, while encouraging all stakeholders to support peaceful democratic participation.
