A former mayor of Blanco, Texas, and founder of Africa Arise International, Mike Arnold, has offered his theory on why records relating to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may still be withheld by US authorities.
Arnold, who describes himself as a strategist, journalist, filmmaker and political consultant, said the legal explanation that releasing the files could endanger individuals was plausible.
Reacting to ongoing discussions over the documents, Arnold dismissed speculation that officials, including the FBI, CIA, a judge or former US President Donald Trump, were paid to prevent their release.
He argued that the possibility of an informant or undercover source being identified could explain why some records remain undisclosed.
Arnold, however, went further by alleging that Tinubu could have provided information to US authorities during the 1993 drug-related case that led to the forfeiture of about $460,000.
He suggested that the information could have involved other individuals connected to criminal networks.
Arnold acknowledged that his position was a theory rather than an established fact, describing it as his “working theory.”
The allegations linking Tinubu to providing information to US authorities have not been independently established in Arnold’s statement.
The issue comes amid continued public interest in records concerning Tinubu held by US authorities and questions over why some documents have not been released.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also criticised the invocation of “danger to lives” as a reason for withholding potentially releasable records, arguing that Nigerians are already facing serious insecurity and economic hardship.
