The Yoruba Union, ΓgbΓ¬nmΓ³ MΓ‘jΓ©kΓ³bΓ‘jΓ© IlΓ©-YorΓΉbΓ‘, has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to explain why records reportedly held by United States law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), should not be made public.
The organisation made the demand in a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its Convener, Olusola Badero, and released through its Home Director, Princess Balogun.
According to the statement, the group argued that Nigerians have a right to examine information concerning the background of political figures seeking to occupy or retain the highest office in the country.
The Yoruba Union alleged that efforts to prevent the release of the records had raised questions about what information they might contain. It urged Tinubu to allow the relevant United States agencies to release any records concerning him so that Nigerians could independently assess the information.
“If Tinubu doesn't have anything hiding why would he block FBI and DEA not to release his file case,” the organisation said, while making allegations concerning drug trafficking and his properties.
The group also questioned the relevance of security screening and profiling of political candidates if citizens could not examine information about their backgrounds.
It said the presidency was a public trust and argued that Nigerians should have access to relevant information about anyone seeking the country's highest political office.
The organisation further accused Tinubu of setting what it described as a dangerous precedent by allegedly seeking to prevent public scrutiny of his past.
“Tinubu is laying a bad precedent for generations to come, and posterity will not be kind to him,” the group said.
The Yoruba Union also questioned why the President would allegedly be concerned about information from his past becoming public, particularly amid discussions surrounding a possible bid for another presidential term.
In another part of the statement, the organisation cited other individuals whom it described as having controversial backgrounds, arguing that unresolved allegations should not prevent public scrutiny of political candidates.
The group mentioned Afolabi Michael, popularly known online as “KC Luxury,” and Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi, while making its argument about the type of precedent it believes could be created.
The Yoruba Union ultimately called on Tinubu to allow any relevant FBI and DEA records to become public and allow Nigerians to determine what they contain.
