The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has fined RwandAir ₦15 million over consumer protection-related infractions involving a passenger's baggage complaint.
Michael Achimugu, the NCAA's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, disclosed the sanction in a post on his X account.
According to Achimugu, RwandAir was penalised for failing to resolve a baggage issue within the timeframe stipulated under Nigeria's aviation consumer protection regulations.
In addition to the ₦15 million fine, the NCAA directed the airline to replace the passenger's damaged bag and pay $170 as first-need compensation.
"The NCAA has sanctioned RwandAir for consumer protection-related infractions. The airline has been fined a sum of N15million for its failure to resolve a baggage issue within stipulated timeframe," Achimugu wrote.
He added that the airline had also been asked to replace the damaged bag and pay the passenger $170 as first-need compensation, as provided under Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023.
Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023 outlines consumer protection obligations for airlines operating in Nigeria, including provisions relating to passengers and baggage-related complaints.
The latest action highlights the NCAA's continued enforcement of passenger rights and its warning that airlines that fail to comply with aviation consumer protection regulations could face sanctions.
NCAA has in recent years stepped up efforts to address complaints involving flight delays and cancellations, baggage issues, refunds and other matters affecting airline passengers.
The sanction against RwandAir is part of the aviation regulator's ongoing efforts to ensure airlines operating in Nigeria comply with established consumer protection rules.
