A 53-year-old Lagos resident, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison after she was caught dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Meiran, Lagos State.
The incident, which was captured on video, reportedly showed the woman stepping out of her compound and dumping refuse into a drainage channel while it was raining.
Monday was arrested on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following the incident.
According to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), she was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence.
She was convicted and sentenced to one month in prison.
LAWMA warned Lagos residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
The authority said such actions constitute environmental offences and can attract sanctions under the law.
LAWMA also said it would continue working with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.
The case has drawn attention online, particularly because a video of the incident reportedly captured the moment Monday came out of her residence to dispose of the refuse in the drainage channel.
Residents have been urged to use approved waste disposal channels and avoid dumping refuse into drains, a practice that can obstruct drainage systems and contribute to flooding during heavy rainfall.
Dafy World E!News reports that the case serves as another warning to residents that indiscriminate waste disposal in Lagos can lead to prosecution and imprisonment.
