Nigerian Singer Adekunle Gold has been open about living with sickle cell disease and says he is currently in a stable stage where things are going well. However, he also noted that some Nigerians still react with shock or worry whenever he mentions his condition, with many wrongly assuming the worst about his health.
In a heartfelt interview with media personality Angela Yee, Gold living with sickle cell disease opened up about the daily stigma and extreme challenges he faces while managing the condition.
He revealed that people often react to him with shock or pity whenever he mentions that he is living with sickle cell, sometimes even looking at him as though he is “close to de@th,” a reaction he says reflects how misunderstood the condition still is.
The interview also took a deeply emotional turn as he recounted a severe health crisis he experienced at the age of 20. According to him, the pain and emotional strain at the time became so overwhelming that he reached a breaking point.
“At 20, I had the craziest crisis of my life. I told God to take my life. And my mom couldn’t even rebuke me. Normally, she would, but that night it got to a point where it felt like the only thing that made sense should just happen,” he said.
Despite the dark moment, he emphasized that he survived and continues to live with gratitude, crediting God for strength and resilience through his ongoing battle with sickle cell disease.
AG added that he is thankful to still be alive today and hopes his story can raise awareness about the realities faced by people living with the condition.
