12 Unclaimed Bodies Evacuated From BSUTH Mortuary For Mass Burial In Makurdi

The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, has evacuated 12 unclaimed bodies from its mortuary for mass burial at Bensasa.

The development was confirmed by the hospital in a social media post on Saturday, August 29, 2026, following the evacuation exercise. Reports and footage circulating online showed the bodies being transported from the hospital mortuary.

According to reports, the bodies had remained unclaimed at the hospital’s mortuary, prompting the management to commence the evacuation exercise. Benue Today also reported that the operation involved the removal of bodies that had remained unclaimed at the facility.

The incident has generated emotional reactions, with many people expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding unclaimed bodies and the difficulties families can face when trying to identify or recover deceased relatives.

This is not the first time BSUTH has carried out such an exercise. In March 2024, 74 unclaimed corpses were reportedly evacuated from the hospital and buried by the Benue State Environmental Sanitation Agency (BENSESA).

The latest development has also renewed conversations about the importance of proper identification systems, timely communication with families and measures to ensure unidentified or unclaimed persons can be traced to their relatives whenever possible.
