Ebola Outbreak In DRC Surpasses 2,500 Deaths, Spreading Rapidly Across Vast Region

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has killed more than 2,500 people and is spreading rapidly across an area larger than France, according to senior United Nations Ebola coordinator Julien Harneis.

Harneis warned on Friday that the response is under growing pressure, saying current aid funding may only last for the next few weeks unless additional money is provided.

He also condemned what he described as an “unacceptable” series of attacks on health workers involved in the response.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, was officially declared in DRC on May 15, 2026, after cases were detected in Ituri Province. It has since spread to several provinces in eastern DRC and has become the country’s deadliest Ebola outbreak, surpassing the 2018–2020 epidemic in deaths.

The rapid spread has been compounded by insecurity, difficulties tracking contacts and limited resources. Health authorities and international partners are calling for increased funding, medical supplies, trained personnel and protection for frontline health workers.

The World Health Organization has classified the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern and continues to coordinate the response with Congolese and regional authorities.

Dafy World E!News will continue to follow developments in the Ebola outbreak.
