Sowore Calls For Arrest And Prosecution Of IBB At 85: "Age Should Not Confer Immunity From Justice"

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and human rights activist, has called for the arrest and prosecution of former military Head of State Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, popularly known as IBB.

Sowore made the call in a post shared on his verified social media accounts on Thursday, August 20, 2026, days after Babangida celebrated his 85th birthday.

“It is not too late to arrest and prosecute Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida for crimes committed under his military dictatorship,” Sowore wrote.

He referenced former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who faced legal proceedings in his 80s, arguing that age should not prevent accountability.

“IBB is 85. His age should not confer immunity from justice,” he added.

Sowore said alleged killings, abuses, corruption and other violations linked to Babangida’s 1985–1993 rule deserve proper investigation and prosecution where evidence supports it.

He also pointed to long-standing controversies surrounding the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and the unresolved killing of journalist Dele Giwa.

As of publication, there was no public response from Babangida or Nigerian authorities to Sowore’s latest call.
