Real Madrid defender and former Chelsea star Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football, bringing his 12-year career with Germany to an end.
The 33-year-old centre-back confirmed his decision on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, saying he wanted to make way for the next generation while turning his full attention to his club career.
“After some time reflecting, the moment has come for me to end my national team career and clear the way for the young generation,” Rüdiger said in a social media announcement.
Rüdiger made his Germany debut in May 2014 in a 0–0 friendly draw against Poland. He went on to earn 86 international caps, representing the four-time world champions at three FIFA World Cups and two European Championships.
His international career also included Germany’s triumph at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, while his club career saw him win the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 before moving to Real Madrid the following year.
Rüdiger's final appearance for Germany came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when Germany were eliminated by Paraguay in the Round of 32. The match ended 1–1 after extra time before Paraguay won the penalty shootout 4–3. Rüdiger played 109 minutes in the match.
Reflecting on his Germany career, Rüdiger said the experience had been an extremely special chapter of his life despite the team's painful defeats at recent major tournaments.
“A new chapter begins for me now, in which I will focus entirely on my club,” he added.
Rüdiger will now concentrate on his career with Real Madrid, where he has continued to play at the highest level.
