FIFA Confirms Gianni Infantino Will Seek Re-Election As President In 2027

FIFA President Gianni Infantino will seek re-election in 2027, the world football governing body has confirmed, despite growing opposition to his leadership from some regional football bodies.

A FIFA spokesperson reaffirmed on Sunday that Infantino's plans to contest the next presidential election remain unchanged.

The 56-year-old Swiss football administrator first announced his intention to seek another term during the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Canada, in April 2026.

FIFA's latest confirmation comes amid renewed criticism of Infantino following a controversial proposal involving private investment in FIFA competitions. The plan, which would have involved selling a stake in major FIFA events, was later abandoned after widespread opposition.

Reports say UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and CONCACAF have been among the football bodies critical of Infantino's leadership, with some calling for his resignation.

However, Infantino continues to enjoy support from several member associations, particularly within Africa and South America.

The FIFA presidential election is scheduled to take place in March 2027. So far, no other candidate has formally announced plans to challenge Infantino.

If successful, Infantino, who was first elected FIFA President in 2016 and re-elected in 2019 and 2023, would secure another term at the helm of world football.

FIFA had officially announced Infantino's intention to stand for re-election in April, while its spokesperson has now reiterated that his plans have not changed.
