INEC Denies Database Breach, Probes Unauthorized Disclosure Of Voter Information

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports suggesting that its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database was hacked, clarifying that a recent incident involving the disclosure of voter information stemmed from the alleged misuse of authorised access credentials.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the commission explained that preliminary findings traced the incident to a user account operated by personnel involved in the ongoing CVR exercise. The account was allegedly used to access and release information relating to a candidate who participated in a recent political party primary election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

INEC emphasized that its investigation found no evidence of external intrusion or cyberattack on the voter registration database. Rather, the information was accessed through legitimate credentials and subsequently disclosed without proper authorisation.

The commission disclosed that a comprehensive investigation is underway and that it is working closely with the Department of State Services (DSS) to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure accountability.

Speaking on the matter, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), reassured Nigerians that the issue was limited in scope and did not compromise the integrity of the wider voter registration system.

According to him, the incident affected only a specific voter record and poses no threat to the personal information of the more than 90 million registered voters contained in INEC's database.

INEC further urged members of the public to disregard unverified claims and speculation regarding the matter, assuring citizens that additional updates would be provided as investigations progress.
