LP Arabambi Sues UNN Over Peter Obi’s Academic Records

Labour Party chieftain, Abayomi Arabambi has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking an order compelling the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), to release information relating to the academic records of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2144/2026, was filed on September 9, 2026, by Arabambi through his lawyer, Anderson Asemota.

According to court documents reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Arabambi said he had requested a Certified True Copy (CTC) of Certificate No. D000198, which is said to relate to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy allegedly issued to Gregory Peter Onwubuasi Obi by UNN in 1984.

He also requested copies of existing official records relating to the degree and certificate, including academic records, graduation or degree-award records, certificate-register entries and relevant Senate or academic approval records.

Arabambi said his request was made under the Freedom of Information Act, 2011, and was received by the university on August 6, 2026.

He alleged that UNN neither supplied the requested records nor issued a written notice of refusal identifying the specific exemption under the Act that would justify withholding the information.

According to the court documents, Arabambi subsequently sent a reminder dated August 31, which was received on September 1.

He is now asking the court for an order of mandamus compelling UNN and its Vice-Chancellor to respond to his request and, where the requested records exist and are within their custody or control, provide the documents.

Among the 19 reliefs sought by the applicant is a declaration that his request constitutes a valid request for information under the Freedom of Information Act.

NAN reported that part of Arabambi's complaint concerns what he described as variations in Peter Obi's name across documents submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and educational authorities.

However, the allegations contained in the suit have not been established by the court.

The case is also yet to be assigned to a judge as Dafy World will continue to monitor the case for further developments.
